• Trail O - start when ready between noon and 2pm.  There are 2 timed controls, not together.  

• The WRE times will be assigned randomly and the start times will be on your packet information.

Competition Map

The competition map is a completely new fieldchecking of Umstead Park.  The original checking was done in three sections between 1982 and  1994 by Dave Linthicum, Pat Dunlavey, Mikell Platt and Mark Dominie.  In 1994 the first two sections were re-done by Mark Dominie and Scott Pleban.  It was again updated in 1997 by Marat Gizatulin and Georgiy Kuntsevitch.

Over the last year it has been completely re-checked by Josef Trzicky for this competition.

Preview Map

Preview maps are available of the "old map" originally produced in 1994 and updated through 1997.  This is  printed in 6 color offset and is not indicative of the printing that will be used for the "new" competition map.

This 14" x 20" printed map is available for $8.  Please send a stamped self addressed envelope and $8 for a copy of this map.

*Due to the fact that these Hydrowick technical running shirts are made to order for this event by Axis Gear we had to place the order on Feb. 4, 2007 to have them done in time for the event.  We made arrangements to place a follow-up order for people who order shirts now through the Sunday of the event, and we will ship those shirts to you as soon as we get them.

Dormitories

• There is one heated/air conditioned dorm. We will use the women's dorm.
• The dorm has two rooms with 16 beds in each and a bathroom with showers between the two rooms.  
• You need to supply pillows, linens, blankets or sleeping bags, and towels.
• Cost is $12 per night per person.

Board Meeting

The USOF Board will meet from 2:30 - 5:30 in the Fairgrounds Youth Center Dining Hall. (see map just above)  Everyone is welcome to attend and watch the proceedings.

• There are numerous hotels within 10 miles of the park ranging from $36 - $150.  We have listed a few, there are many more in this google map.

Model Event

There will be a model area open from Friday 10 am - 6 pm and on Saturday 8 am - 10 am 

• Park hours 8:00am until 7:00pm (gate is locked promptly at 7:00pm)
• Sunset 6:10pm
• 10:00am - 1:00pm purchase maps $5 at the Visitor Center - enter from route US-70
• 1:00pm - 5:00pm  Purchase maps at registration near the south parking area
  • You may not start the model event after 5:00pm
• Maps can be purchased at packet pickup at the Days Inn between 6:00pm and 10:00pm

The Model is representative of the following:

• Terrain: All days
• Mapping style: All days
• Map scale and contour interval
  • The Model map is available in both 1:10,000 and 1:15,000, 3 m contour interval.
  • Day 1 uses a different scale
• Map symbols: Days 2 and 3
• Map printing
• Control equipment: Day 2. 
  • Days 1 and 3 use an older version of SportIdent, otherwise the equipment is identical to Day 2
• There is no start, finish, or download for the Model
• The Model is not representative of the "Trail O" event

Directions

• Enter the park from the North Entrance
• After the visitor center turn left on "Maintenance Road"
• Then take the Right Fork
• Next left at sign to Bridle and Bike Trail Head.  
• Park on the right side of the road across from the field.

Beginners Information

Everyone is welcome at this event from Beginners through advanced

If you are just starting out, and would like to try orienteering, then we have a special program for you it is called

Map Hike

The entry fee is $5 per event.  That includes your map.  Go to registration to sign up and get your map.  From there you will get directions to go to the start.  Go up to the start official and they will tell you when to start.  Follow your course and be sure to check in at the finish.  If you don't check back in we will have search teams out looking for you after the course closes so be sure to check in at the finish - even if you don't get all the controls.
