November 18 2007 Score-O at Umstead Park

At the November 18 Score-O event we had 68 competing groups and a total attendance of 86 individuals. The weather was cool and mostly sunny; perfect for running in the woods. We apologize to those who had to scrounge maps, but the nice weather meant a larger-than-expected turnout.

This was the first Score-O for many competitors, but everyone seemed to catch on very quickly. It seems that the White course was a bit too easy, since only one team decided to run White and found all ten controls and finished in less than one hour. Twenty-four teams opted for the Yellow course, and most found a majority of the yellow controls yet finished close to the 1-hour limit. Likewise the thirty-nine full Score-O course competitors completed their runs with an impressive number of controls punched on their maps, with most receiving only minor overtime penalties.

When tabulating the results we used a spreadsheet so as to avoid mathematical errors. We also tried to give the benefit of the doubt when it was difficult to make out the punch pattern on a torn or ragged map. Nevertheless, it is likely that some errors were made in recording the results. So we encourage competitors to please let us know if any errors are suspected. Maps will be available for pickup at the December 2 event, and we'll be glad to fix any discrepancies that are found.

We would like to thank the terrific team of volunteers that helped us! Joe Halloran did a wonderful job with the beginners class. Ken Hanson and Terese Camp were a terrific help with registration. A big thank-you to Mihai Ibanescu and Bill Ebenstein for their help with control pick-up!
