We had a fantastic turnout at the season opener, and almost everyone
remembered that our memberships renew in September. Lots of new folks
showed up, we had over 50 in the beginner class.
The beginners did a fantastic job of 50 entries on White & Yellow there
were only 2 DNF's. On the other hand the advanced competitors had a terrible
time, with 53% not finishing. The big problem was #2. I have done an
analysis of the map that you can see below. The biggest problem is that
the depression, while 6' deep and 15' blends in remarkably well with its
surroundings. So if you missed it, and then tried to relocate from the
fence you would find yourself well short of the depression when your pace count
ran out.
There was a big ROTC turnout. A great group of kids, and we are pleased
they are orienteering with us.
Analysis of control #2 - JH, on the advanced courses September 23,

I started at each of the three attack points and did a compass bearing
and pace count toward the control. The distances came from map
measuring, and the arrows show where I ended up at the end of the measured
pace count and bearing.
As you can see, the bearing from the NW ruin (which was pretty much
ruined and mostly covered with leaves) is quite accurate. The
bearing from the ruin near the clearing came out about 20 meters SW of the
control.
The big error was the distance of the control from the fence. The
measurement is 93 m, but the pace count was 150 m.
There is a small dark blue marking tape on a branch over the depression
so you will know you are at the right spot. (Don't expect to see
the tape from a distance.) |
