What a wild and woolly event! In spite of tornado watches and sporadic heavy showers, we had a pretty good event with 42 starts (58 participants). As could be expected, the lack of fair weather caused the fair weather orienteers to stay home. But the hardcore orienteers came out in spite of the threatening weather.

I got soaking wet while putting out the White Course controls (I dried out by the end of the event). That shower ended by noon and everyone was able to start their courses under a dry sky. Those participants still out on the course during the last 40 minutes were rewarded with another dose of liquid sunshine. And to prove that no good deed goes unpunished, Bill, Artem, Miles, and Phil got another soaking while picking up controls after the end of the event. Thanks fellows.

Understandably, there were a higher level of DNFs in this event than most. The Boy Scouts from Troop 207 had an early deadline for returning to their scout hut and left their courses early. A number of the participants in the advanced (Brown, Green, Red, and Blue) courses were reluctant to cross the rain swollen Richlands Creek (I do not blame them -- I do not wade deep water and I am not about to cross on a log). The creek was very tame on Saturday when I put the controls out.

Similar to the January event at Lake Johnson, the advanced courses contained 10 controls with "dummy" controls nearby. This was a hit at the January event, so we tried it again. This was explained in the email announcement sent out prior to the event. I tried to mention it to participants on Sunday, but when the event got hectic, I could not continue the notification. I apologize to any participant that I did not warn (fortunately, the penalty for a wrong punch was a five minute addition and not a DQ).

See you all at the next event.

Ron

Course Setters Comments - Joseph Huberman

I had such a good time at the Lake Johnson event I wanted to set the "extra" controls for Schenck Forest.  I tried to make them as difficult as possible while still keeping them fair.  I tried to set the approach up so that one would come to the controls at right angles and have to use map clues to figure out the correct control.  It looks like I did a good job, as only Patrick's group got them all correct.  (The creek was very low when I set the courses too.)

Let me know if you like these extra challenges... I can dream up others!

Joseph
