Picture of the forest during the event |
Despite the possibility that it could all have been an April 1st joke, 38 members showed up and successfully completed one of the two courses, no less than 20 of which venturing on the hard course. In fact, three of them had so much fun they decided to go for a second round and helped retrieve all the controls from the forest – a big thank you for that to Mihai Ibanescu, Bill Ebenstein and Vladimir Zlatkin. During the day, I had help from Harold Meder and Artem Kazantsev in setting up the controls – thank you both very much. I should mention, however, that Artem set controls only on the the easy course, so he did not receive any performance-enhancing advance knowledge of the hard course. Joseph Huberman took care of the administrative details, and most importantly helped me with advice on how to run things.
On the easy course, first and second place finishers came within less than a minute of each other, with the team of Rebecca Murphey, Chris Rhodes and Katarina Midelfort outrunning Lea Peace and Lisa Pitkin by only 49 seconds. It goes to show that while two is company, three is not always a crowd.
On the hard course, Josef Trzicky not only finished in 30 minutes, as if to say "You call that a hard course?", but did so after running another race in Charlotte in the morning and then driving all the way back to Raleigh. Kudos to him!
I hope everyone had a good time. Here are the results, and don’t forget to share with everyone your route choice!
