Ron Brown

It was a great day for Orienteering. The weather was not too warm for the participants and not too cool for the registrars. There were 23 entries in the Score-O portion of the event and a total of 66 participants overall.

An after-event analysis revealed that control AH (at fence corner - 5 points) was the most popular with 20 visits. The least popular 5-point control was AM (a trail junction in the middle of the area) with 12 visits.

The most popular 10-point controls were CU and TN (located at trail junctions near where the stream enters the lake) with 18 visits apiece. The least popular 10-point control was RG (a pit in clear forest near the arboretum) with 5 visits.

The most popular 15-point control was JF (an erosion gully near CU & TN [see above]) with 17 visits. The least popular 15-point control was TZ (a ruin in the middle of the area) with 3 visits. It seems that a lot of folks went in a big circle and left out some of the controls in the middle (maybe holding them in reserve in case they later found out they had enough time to get them). A close second for least favorite was RB (an erosion gully intersection across the creek on the southern corner of the map). I may have to increase the point value or add another control in the vicinity in order to make it more attractive.

Regarding the 20-point controls, half the participants visited SU (an erosion gully intersection on the northern corner of the map) and a quarter of the participants visited JL (a downed tree on the western corner of the map).

Congratulations to Josef Trzicky for finding all 27 controls and he was only 2:45 over the time limit (Note - there were 3 more controls than the last Score-O event at Schenck Forest).
