Whispering Pines May, 2004
Meet Director: Gary Wiggins
It was a nice day for orienteering; warm but not too warm, and dry. It was also a great day for wildlife watchers, if you care to stretch the definition of wildlife to include ticks. There were invisible ticks, little brown ticks, big brown ticks, and big brown ticks with white spots on them. It was really an entomologist’s dream come true. Some of the ticks were so big I was tempted to attach myself to them. After all, turnabout is fair play. I checked with the ranger after the meet. Ticks are considered wildlife and it is illegal to remove wildlife from the park. So, if any of you took any with you, please bring them back. OK, enough of that, on to the results.
The best times were turned in by Chandra Conover on White, Steve Jernigan on Yellow, Andrew and Tim Lewis on Orange, Gordon Pitz on Brown, Jeff Thompson and Don Childrey on Green, and Josef Tzicky as usual on Red. Will someone step forward and give Josef a little competition please? There were a large number of contestants on Yellow and Orange. If any of you are interested in learning some intermediate or advanced orienteering skills, I plan to organize some one-day orienteering training classes in the fall. These classes will be open to members only so consider joining the Klub before the fall.
Thanks, thanks and more thanks go to Dwight Iverson for helping out with the meet. Dwight helped with flagging controls, setting controls, drawing the maps, toting water (that’s carrying water for you non-Southerners), registration, start, finish, tick spotting, and picking up controls. Thanks also go to Bill Ebenstein for picking up controls.
