Seventy orienteers participated in the Raven Rock State Park meet on a sunny, cool day. A large group from Boy Scout Troop 80 drove from Clinton.
Five courses were set. The Yellow course was very competitive with 29 persons competing on 15 maps. Charlie Brake and Mark Viser from Clinton Troop 80 had the best time at 43 minutes.
The Green and Brown courses were similar except for a few controls on the outer reaches of the courses. The first control on both courses was a long leg through significant underbrush, causing difficulty for some competitors. The first control on the Orange course caused similar problems. Control 4 on Brown/Green (control 3 on Orange) was probably the most difficult, even though it was close to a main trail. It was a small dry ditch obscured by underbrush. It was best found by following a bearing from a prominent nearby feature, such as the hill/pit near the trail junction.
Harold Meder helped check the courses and set streamers. Mary Stevens helped set controls. Ron Brown and Joe Halloran helped with registration, and Joe provided instruction to a number of participants new to orienteering. Joe Halloran, Gordon Pitz, Mary Stevens and Paul Hart picked up controls. The support of Paul Hart (the Park Superintendent) is greatly appreciated.
