The hot and rainy weather broke just in time for the first BOK meet of the 2003-04 season and recognition of National Orienteering Day. The combination of pent up demand for orienteering after a long off-season and the beautiful weather made for a tremendous turn out. There were 85 starts involving over 150 individuals, so many that we ran out of maps for several courses (yellow was the first to go). We love to have large youth groups (such as the NE Guilford High School group and Boy Scout Troop 80 from Clinton) participate, and we will do our best to have enough maps in the future. Groups larger than 5 should let us know a week before the event about how many will be coming and what courses they will be on. It is great that our competitors are such good sports and we can recycle maps whenever we run out.

Everyone was very patient and I heard no complaints about the long lines. Thank you for enduring. I do not understand the complaint about spider webs. I thought that I must have walked through every one in Schenck Forest when I hung the control flags on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. How could there possibly have been any left?

The other complaint I heard about was control number ER. Many had difficulty finding it (a big thank you to Ray Shillito, who rehung the control flag after finding it on the ground), but may others did not have difficulty finding it. That location is the most distinct feature in that quadrant of the map, therefore you can expect to see it again. We will honor ER as the notorious control of the day. Feel free to nominate your choice of notorious control of the day at future meets.

Thanks to all who helped with the meet (see list above). Those of you who stood in the long lines realize that we can use more help, especially at the peak time of registration and starting. Please volunteer.

All in all, it was a great day. Hope to see you all on October 12 at Umstead Park - Reedy Creek (I-40 entrance).
