Meet Director - Gary Wiggins

Orienteering or the State Fair? Orienteering or the State Fair? As I set the meet up, I was wondering how our turnout would be affected by the State Fair. As it turned out, our turnout (couldn't resist that one) was not affected at all.

On a beautiful day for orienteering, we had sixty-three individuals or groups participating. One control, DE on the Brown, Green and Red courses, seemed to give some participants a little trouble. The control was placed in an area of stony ground on the bank of an intermittent stream about 100 meters from an obvious attack point. While a fairly clear corridor ran from the attack point to the control location, the control was surrounded on three sides by dense brush and blown down trees. If the control was missed slightly to the left or right, participants entered into the equivalent of orienteering hell. Navigating from the attack point to the control was a true test of fine or yellow-light (cautious orienteering where precision navigation is important) orienteering skills.

Thanks go to Jim O'Donnel, Beth Shelly, Will Corkey, Pat Downie, Kyle Halloran, Jennifer Schmidt, John Flavin, and Joe Halloran for helping to make the meet a great success.

If you want to improve your "fine" or "yellow-light" (I suppose red-light is when you hit the catch feature after the control.) orienteering, Gary will be giving an "intermediate skills" workshop sometime in November.  More details later.
