Tick Rash Study Participants Needed

The University of North Carolina is collaborating with the CDC to do a study on STARI.  To help with this study keep any ticks you  remove. If a rash develops later it will be very helpful to have the tick. The easiest way is to tape the tick on an index card (which also kills the tick), note the date and place on the body on the card.

(Editor's note: Of course we still recommend that you use a tick repellent. We recommend the Sawyers Tick Repellent that you put on your clothes and let dry before you put your clothes on. We find it works very well - when we use it on our pants, socks and shoes we rarely find a tic on us after the event.)

As part of a study to better understand tick-related rashes, researchers are looking for people who:
- have a circular red rash surrounding a tick bite that is at least 2 inches across,
- are not under treatment with antibiotics, and
- are willing to have two small skin biopsies of the rash and two blood samples taken.

Study subjects must meet all three criteria and be aged 18 and older. Those who are accepted into the study will
receive a free medical visit and $250.

Persons who have such a rash and are interested in enrolling are encouraged to telephone (252)-724-8249.

The research study is being conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, East Carolina
University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and selected medical practices in Eastern and Central
North Carolina.

Summer Sprint Series  Josef and Ken. have volunteered to put on three (maybe 4) sprints this summer.  Josef will design and set the courses, and Ken. will handle the registration.  The events will start at 9:00am and everyone must be done by 11:00am.  Summer weekends are the busy season for the park, and our permission is dependent on not having our cars in the parking lot after 11:00am when the regular park crowds arrive.

Sprints are relatively easy short courses that advanced runners will finish in about 10-15 minutes.  They are part of the USOF sprint series, and national sprint ranking points will be awarded.

Everyone is welcome, however the sprints will be designed at the orange level.  (We will not have beginners or intermediate courses (white and yellow) at the sprint events, but the courses are short so you are welcome to try your hand at the more advanced level.  Nor will we have any classes at the sprint events.)  Our regular fees will apply (Members free; Entry $5; Finger stick rental $5; Extra maps $2)

Each sprint is about 2K - 3K in length and there will be two sprints set up at each event.  You may take one or both for the same entry fee as long as you have time.  (Remember you must be done by 11am)

Finger sticks are required at all BOK events.  You can rent one at the event for $5, or purchase the Finger Stick for $37.  You can purchase the finger sticks at an event, and then we will personalize it after the event, and give it to you at the following event, or you can purchase online and receive it personalized at the upcoming event.

Remaining Jobs from the October 29, 2007 meeting to-do list:

  • begin planning for an "A" meet with the US Team for spring of 2009
    • Vladimir Gusiatnikov agreed to do it, plans remain to be worked out.
  • Print the Umstead map on waterproof paper for sale at stores
    • We have a price quote, need to work on the final design

Want to brush up on your map symbols and control symbols? There is a table showing the map symbol, control symbol and a 3d drawing of the feature.  Also a .pdf you can print and take it all on a single sheet.

Ticks are now ubiquitous!  We recommend using tick repellant.  We have found "Sawyer Permethrin" clothing spray to be very effective at keeping ticks off.  You apply it to your clothes (waist down) and let it dry before putting your clothes on.  It is available at most camping, outdoor and "big box" stores.
